Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of primary care, infectious disease, public health, and preventative medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, and social workers involved in the treatment of patients with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV), specifically those experiencing homelessness.
Program Overview
People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are significantly affected by HIV, HCV, and substance use disorders (SUDs). It is critical that clinicians understand not only how to link these patients to care and utilize community organization, but to have a foundational knowledge of treatment principles that should guide clinician-patient interactions. In this 1-hour webinar, Dr. Stacey Trooskin and licensed clinical social worker, Juliana Wallace, discuss the basics of language around discussing health care for PEH and the principles of trauma-informed care and harm reduction. The training will also highlight examples of, and implementation strategies for, these founding principles for health care for PEH.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Identify strategies to optimize outreach for HIV and HCV testing and linkage to care for PEH
- Identify key principles of harm reduction and trauma-informed care to optimize HIV and HCV care among PEH
- Identify community-based opportunities and logistics for colocation of HIV and HCV healthcare services with SUD and housing programs
