Program Description

Clinicians must be prepared to identify the cause of virologic failure (VF) if it occurs and conduct resistance testing to identify patient susceptibility to antiretrovirals should they require a new antiretroviral therapy regimen (ART). Adherence issues or competing priorities should also be assessed when VF occurs. There are multiple considerations when designing a new ART regimen, though the goal for all people living with HIV is viral suppression. A small subset of patients are heavily treatment experienced and have multidrug resistance. Recent approvals of therapies specifically for this population have changed clinical practice and, though these patients are rare, clinicians must be fully prepared to identify subsequent ART regimens in challenging circumstances and incorporate options into clinical practice. In this interactive activity, Drs. Monica Gandhi and Jürgen Rockstroh will discuss best practices for assessing and addressing VF.

Target Audience

This multimedia program addresses identified knowledge and practice gaps among infectious disease and HIV specialist physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician associates (PAs), and provides information related to clinical decision making and patient communication across critical junctures in the HIV care continuum.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be better prepared to:

1. Select the most appropriate resistance testing strategy based on viral load dynamics, treatment history, and timing of virologic failure
2. Address reasons for nonadherence to ART regimens, including competing priorities, through a shared decision-making process
3. Individualize ART regimens in the face of multidrug resistance, including selection of an optimized background regimen
4. Identify effective workflow processes to optimize implementation of injectable ART for HTE patients with MDR

Instructions to Receive Credit

In order to receive credit for this activity, the participant must take the pretest, view the content, pass the posttest with a 70% or higher, and complete the evaluation.
