Optimizing HIV and HCV Treatment and Prevention Among People Experiencing Homelessness

Target Audience 

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of primary care, infectious disease, public health, and preventive medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, and social workers involved in the treatment of patients with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV), specifically those experiencing homelessness. 

Program Overview 

It is well recognized that HIV, HCV, and opioid use disorder are intertwined epidemics that result in increased morbidity and mortality across affected populations. However, people experiencing homelessness (PEH) are disproportionately impacted by this “syndemic,” and clinicians serving this population are challenged to provide effective treatment and prevention services for often hard-to-reach patient subpopulations. This enduring webinar with Drs Arsalan Shah, Sarah Rowan, Stacey Trooskin, and Juliana Wallace will provide critical updates on specific strategies to improve testing and linkage to care, retention in care, and an overview of guidelines for treatment of HIV and HCV. The webinar will also address system-level barriers and present real-world models with proven success. 

Educational Objectives  

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to: 

• Describe the principles of trauma-informed care and harm reduction 
• Evaluate the adaptability of simplified HIV and HCV treatment and prevention protocols to the care to PEH 
• Identify opportunities for colocation of HIV, HCV, SUD, and housing services to optimize retention of PEH in comprehensive care
