Target Audience

This activity is designed for obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses who have not yet prescribed preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or who are new to PrEP provision.

Program Overview

Many women are at risk for contracting HIV and would benefit from PrEP. OB/GYNs are well placed to evaluate sexual health and discuss and initiate PrEP, yet are often hesitant to discuss PrEP. There are currently 4 available PrEP options: 2 oral options and 2 long-acting injectable (LAI) options. OB/GYNs should be able to discuss nuances of each of the 4 options with their patients and feel comfortable initiating treatment if the patient is interested. In this interactive activity, Dr. Charlotte Rolle discusses strategies for sexual health discussion and assessment of risk factors for HIV, incorporation of trauma-informed approaches, safety and efficacy of PrEP options, administration instructions, and how to assess and support adherence.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of HIV epidemiology among women in the US
  • Incorporate nonstigmatizing HIV risk and PrEP eligibility assessments with all sexually active patients in the OB/GYN setting
  • Describe key components of oral PrEP initiation and management for the OB/GYN patient population
  • Review protocols for implementing LAI PrEP regimens for the OB/GYN patient population
