Program Overview

It is not uncommon for patients with HIV (PWH) to experience challenges in social determinants of health, such as substance use disorder (SUD), homelessness, or mental health challenges. Given the high rates of these challenges and other potential trauma, it is critical to employ a trauma-informed care approach to HIV management. Addressing the patient’s competing priorities and encouraging adherence and retention in care through medication changes, medication to manage comorbidities, collocated care, and collaboration with other partners is a key component of HIV care. In this 4-part interactive series, Dr. Jason Halperin will review key principles of trauma-informed care and management strategies for PWH who are experiencing homelessness, have SUD, or have mental health challenges. Each part provides information on 1 population; complete all 4 parts to have a comprehensive educational base for managing PWH who have challenges in social determinants of health.
