Activity Description

Amylin-based therapies represent one of the most active frontiers in obesity pharmacotherapy research, yet most clinicians remain unfamiliar with the biology supporting amylin’s potential use in weight loss, the rapidly expanding pipeline, and the emerging trial evidence. In this concise Top 10 activity, expert faculty answer the questions clinicians are asking most, from amylin’s role in satiety, gastric emptying, and glucose regulation and how it differs from GLP-1, to potential integration into the therapeutic paradigm. Through a practical, question-driven format, the program reviews clinical trial data for amylin analogues, dual amylin and calcitonin receptor agonists, and combination and unimolecular approaches and explores patient selection, tolerability, counseling, and individualized management, preparing clinicians to integrate these agents as they approach clinical availability.

Target Audience

This educational activity will address identified knowledge and practice gaps among primary care, internal medicine, endocrinology, and diabetology MDs, NPs, and PAs.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Explain the pathophysiology of amylin in energy regulation, including appetite control, gastric emptying, glucose homeostasis, and interactions with other satiety hormones (eg, glucagon-like peptide-1 [GLP-1])
  • Describe the clinical profiles and trial evidence for emerging amylin-based therapies
  • Evaluate where amylin-based therapies may be considered in individualized obesity management

Agenda

Introduction

Unmet Need: Variable patient response to existing obesity therapies creates demand for mechanistically distinct options

New Frontiers: Amylin-based therapies are expanding the obesity treatment landscape beyond incretin approaches

Why Now: Multiple agents approaching regulatory approval, robust clinical trial data, and evolving treatment paradigms
